Back to School: How Educators Define a Profession-Ready Student

Move-in day has come and gone, syllabi are set and accounting faculty across New Jersey are settling into a new semester. But one question keeps following them into the classroom: are students actually ready for the profession waiting for them on the other side of graduation?

That question sits at the heart of the American Institute of CPA's (AICPA) Profession Ready Initiative. Over the past several months, the Profession Ready Initiative team convened four Academic Discussion Groups, gathering accounting educators together to talk candidly about workforce readiness, student preparedness and the skills and competencies graduates need to hit the ground running. As the fall semester kicks off, their observations are worth a deeper look.

The following themes reflect common threads raised across the discussion groups. They aren't meant to represent the views of every accounting educator, but they do offer useful, real-time context on what's happening in classrooms right now.

What Educators Are Telling Us

• Critical thinking and professional judgment. Students can execute structured assignments well. Ambiguity is where things get harder, faculty said, especially when students have to weigh alternatives or respond to an unfamiliar problem on their own.
• Communication is a key focus. Practice makes perfect. Faculty are assigning presentations, group projects and mock interviews to build students' confidence and professional presence.
• AI fluency has begun to outpace AI judgment. Students use AI tools comfortably, but they don’t always know how to question the output, spot its limits or apply skepticism to what it produces.
• Real-world experience is critical to success. Internships, simulations, guest speakers and practitioner interactions build the professionalism and business awareness that lectures alone can't replicate.
