Here’s what you need to get good at:
- Dig deep into financial reporting and technical research.
- Handle budgeting, forecasting, and financial planning—get some real FP&A experience.
- Design internal controls and manage risks.
- Lead teams and help people grow.
- Think strategically and really understand the business.
- Find ways to make processes smoother—automate where you can.
- Communicate clearly with executives.
- Make tough calls, even when things aren’t clear.
How do you build these skills?
- Take charge of a full reporting or budgeting cycle from start to finish.
- Get involved in ERP rollouts or system upgrades.
- Present your financial insights to senior leaders—make your voice heard.
- Go for advanced credentials like an MBA or CMA if they fit your goals.
- Work on your executive presence and learn to negotiate.
- Practice succession planning and coaching—help others rise while you do.
- Grow your network in the industry. The NJCPA offers many opportunities to network with your peers.
- Connect with peers—try joining the NJCPA Emerging Leaders Interest Group.
The goal? You’re getting ready to step into roles like Accounting Manager, Assistant Controller, Audit Manager, or other jobs on the leadership track.
