From the NFL to ESG: The Surprising Versatility of the CPA License

by Barry R. Palatnik, MBA, Ed.D., CPA, Stockton University and Christina Baldosaro, Stockton University Accounting Student - June 15, 2026

From an early age, we begin imagining our future careers. Our first inspiration often comes from television characters, movies, parents or teachers. Children often dream of becoming doctors, police officers or astronauts   but rarely a certified public accountant (CPA). As students progress through high school and college, however, members of the accounting profession can raise awareness of the many opportunities within the field, and resources such as This Way to CPA (thiswaytocpa.com/why-cpa/articles/career-options/find-your-niche-accounting/) can help guide students toward career paths that align with their interests and strengths.

Choose Various Careers

Students pursuing an accounting degree can choose from several career paths, each offering diverse types of experience and opportunities for specialization.

One option is public accounting, where professionals work with a variety of companies across multiple industries and provide services such as taxation; auditing; financial accounting; financial advisory; forensic accounting; environmental, social and governance (ESG) related services; and consulting. Larger firms, including the Big Four, offer the broadest range of services, giving students wide exposure early in their careers before they specialize.

Another option is private or corporate accounting, where individuals work for a single organization and gain a deeper understanding of its operations and financial structure. Depending on the company s size, roles may include financial accounting, managerial accounting, taxation or internal audit, with larger public companies offering more variety than smaller private firms.

Beyond these traditional paths, accounting students can also build careers in nonprofit organizations, government agencies or education, applying their accounting skills in the public service environment.

It is safe to say that every business needs an accountant. This means accounting students can choose to work in any industry. Students who enjoy sports can find opportunities within the MLB, NFL, NBA or NHL, as each team requires accountants and CPA firms to audit their financial records. Those interested in entertainment can pursue accounting positions in music, theater, movies or television. Even within just sports and entertainment, students can explore numerous niches that match their personal interests.

Consider Niches

The article 28 Accounting Niches to Boost Your Firm’s Revenues in 2025 (doublehq.com/blog/accounting-niches/) emphasizes the value of aligning personal interests with client needs. When accountants develop specialized skills in areas such as real estate, financial planning or industry-specific advisory work, they can offer deeper expertise and deliver more meaningful value to clients. This alignment not only strengthens client relationships but also supports long-term profitability, which is essential for sustainable growth. For students, this creates an opportunity to identify niches that match their personal interests and long-term career goals.

CPA review courses have also expanded their support for students seeking career niches. For example, UWorld (accounting.uworld.com/cpa-review/cpa-career/jobs/) highlights the wide range of opportunities available in the profession from creating financial statements and reducing tax obligations to estate planning, preparing tax returns, identifying risks for clients and even serving as expert witnesses in legal cases.

Explore the Options

As students explore potential career paths, it is easier than ever to research accounting firms, analyze their service offerings and determine which niches resonate with their strengths. Reviewing a firm s leadership, strategic direction and emerging service lines can reveal areas currently in high demand. By understanding how firms position themselves in the marketplace, students can make informed decisions about where they might thrive and how they can contribute to a firm s future success.

The CPA license opens a wealth of opportunities for accounting students far beyond the traditional roles many imagine. Benefits include increased professional credibility, stronger job security and greater long-term earning potential. Widely regarded as the gold standard within the accounting profession, the CPA designation allows professionals to pursue diverse career paths and leadership roles across a broad range of industries.

As the profession continues to innovate and expand, today's students have the chance not only to find their place within accounting but to help shape the future of the field itself.
