Leaving New Jersey: Effectively Changing Tax Residency
Parag Patel, J.D., LL.M. (tax) — Parag P. Patel, Esq.
With the new reduction in the deductibility of state and local taxes, many clients are exploring leaving New Jersey. Although changing a client’s residence from a high-tax state (i.e., NJ, NY) to a low, or no-tax state (i.e., FL) can dramatically reduce the amount of state taxes paid, high-tax states have inflexible residency rules and do not let their residents leave easily. We will identify state tax residency rules and methods to effectively change tax domicile, and explore planning opportunities to minimize state income and inheritance taxes.

Passport Revocation and Navigating the IRS: A Case Study
E. Martin Davidoff, CPA, Esq. — Prager Metis CPAs, LLC
Passport Revocation: Marty will provide a comprehensive review of the IRS rules regarding the certification to the U.S. State Department of Taxpayers as seriously delinquent in their federal tax liabilities. Such certifications lead to Taxpayers' inability to apply or renew their passports and may result in the revocation of passports. The course will go through the law, the Internal Revenue Manual (IRM) on IRS policies as well as appeal rights through the U.S. Tax Court. The program will also review the September 2019 Report from the Treasury Inspector General for Tax Administration (TIGTA) which evaluated the implementation of the program.
Navigating the IRS: This session covers how to represent your clients before the IRS, from the first phone call through the resolution of the problem. The program details the steps in a tax controversy, describes tools, gives practical guidance in dealing with the IRS and discusses alternative resolution scenarios in dealing with collection matters.
