How Volunteering Spurs Professional Growth

The NJCPA is extremely fortunate to have a community of members who give so much of themselves. During my tenure, I have had the pleasure of working with many dedicated professionals who donate their time, knowledge and skills. What I’ve learned from them has made me a better volunteer and a better person. And it’s helped them grow as well. So, why do they volunteer?

Here are some reasons:

  • Make a difference. Volunteers make a difference every day in the lives of students, young professionals or with their clients. From fielding tax questions from the public, liaising with government agencies through committees/interest groups, mentoring future CPAs or talking to students about careers in accounting, our members show they are dedicated to making the CPA profession the best it can be.
  • Gain confidence. Volunteering is a great way to gain confidence. It gives accounting professionals a chance to build on skills they already have and learn new ones. Members can hone their leadership, presentation and writing skills in a low-pressure, encouraging environment — volunteers don’t get fired!
  • Build relationships. Making connections is one benefit of volunteering that cannot be overstated. The connections made can last a lifetime, and building a network of trusted professionals that you can call on when you need them is crucial to professional growth and a successful career. NJCPA membership provides you with a great source of connections — it can open doors that may have been closed previously.
  • Take on new challenges. Accounting professionals who are looking for a change from their day-to-day work assignments can find it by volunteering. We have members working on government task forces and committees and liaising with other professional groups, and members who take on significant leadership roles within our organization — chapter leaders are a perfect example. More than 100 dedicated volunteers work together to ensure high-quality, local, affordable CPE for all members.
  • Enjoyment. Having fun is part of the lure of volunteering. Working together with colleagues in a non-work environment can be enjoyable and rewarding, and so is making a difference in the lives of the next generation or a certain professional.  

Volunteering is worth the investment. You almost always get more than you give.
