HIGHLIGHTS
During this session, the following topics and speakers will be featured:
- The CPA Pipeline Challenge - Jerry Maginnis, Retired Partner, KPMG
The number of individuals sitting for and passing the CPA exam has been declining for years. More recently, many Universities have been experiencing concerning declines in their Accounting Program enrollments. All of this is occurring during a period where many Baby Boomer CPA’s have recently retired or are contemplating doing so in the short term. These trends are creating a crisis. Our speaker, Jerry Maginnis, the former Office Managing Partner of KPMG’s Philadelphia Office and currently an Executive in Residence supporting the Accounting Program at Rowan University, will discuss these trends and proactive ways to address them. Jerry is the author of a new book, recently published by John Wiley & Sons: Advice for a Successful Career in the Accounting Profession, How to Make Your Assets Greatly Exceed Your Liabilities”.
- Professional Issues Update for Educators - Ralph Thomas, Executive Director, NJCPA and Harry Wills, President, NJCPA
The business landscape in New Jersey and across the nation is constantly shifting. Ralph Thomas, NJCPA CEO & Executive Director, and Harry Wills, 2021-2022 NJCPA President will bring that picture into greater focus with their accounting and finance professional issues update, covering macro trends in business, the profession and the economy, as well as legislative and regulatory changes and their implications.
- Diversity in Accounting: Historical Perspectives and Forward Look - Kecia Williams Smith, Assistant Professor, North Carolina Agricultural & Technical State University
Since the 1969 AICPA Resolution on integrating the accounting profession, there have been numerous approaches to diversity. This session will discuss the historical journey to the AICPA Resolution and contemporary ideas on diversifying the profession. She brings a unique perspective to accounting diversity based on her practice and academic backgrounds.
