BlockChain & Crypotassets
Sean Stein Smith, CPA, CFE, CGMA, CMA - Lehman College

This session will cover several of the changes and updates that have moved to the forefront in the blockchain and cryptoasset space, including the development of stablecoins, permissioned blockchains, and enterprise applications that continue to move from concept to reality. Breaking down some of the technical updates that have occurred in the space, and including the accounting and attestation implications of these updates and changes, attendees will leave the session better equipped to discuss and explain these trends to colleagues and clients. In addition, this presentation will discuss how internal controls and cybersecurity continue to be influenced and impacted by the growing use of blockchain for enterprise.

Attendees will leave this session with the ability to:

  • Articulate and explain recent changes and developments related to permissioned and enterprise blockchains
  • Discuss and analyze the trends and implications connected to stablecoins
  • Examine and understand how recent IRS updates and pronouncements will drive change in the accounting profession moving forward

IT Modernization Services

This presentation will take you through a customer journey story, highlighting IT Modernization Services. We will cover the "Customer Journey" approach as it applies to performing an IT Assessment, share how clients benefit, how you can identify clients that could also benefit from these types of services and what questions you can ask in order to understand your clients' needs. The objective of this presentation is for attendees to be able to explain the ways in which IT Modernization services may improve a client’s operations, increase efficiency and/or mitigate risk, as well as recognize whether a client be able to benefit from IT modernization services.

Cloud Accounting Systems and ERP Solutions

This presentation will help you gain an understanding of modern cloud based accounting systems and Enterprise Resource Planning solutions. It will highlight their work with past clients as it pertains to cloud technologies, discuss the application ecosystem as a whole, share how applications can enhance business processes and operations, and how you can recognize and/or identify clients that would benefit from a modern cloud based system. The objective of this presentation is for attendees to be able to identify what kind of applications live in the cloud ecosystem, analyze how these applications can enhance business processes and operations, and recognize when a client may be in need or can benefit from modern cloud based accounting systems and Enterprise Resource Planning solutions.

Thomas Burns

Thomas works with Withum's Management Consulting Services team having experience in enterprise technology strategy, IT modernization, business strategy development, project management and organizational change management. He specializes in ERP fit-gap assessments and implementations, focusing on QBO and related cloud software applications. Past clients have included those in manufacturing, international retail and ecommerce, e-sports, and education, among others. Thomas is a graduate from the University of Notre Dame with an engineering degree, and has previous experience working in data analytics.

Consultant

Christian graduated Cum Laude from Villanova University with a degree in Accounting and is CPA Certified in the State of New York. After spending two years in Financial Service Audit at KPMG, he transitioned to Withum's Management Consulting Team with a focus on Strategy and Operational Excellence.

Christian has worked on a variety of projects involving budeting/analytics, project governance, risk assessment, organization transformations and digital transformations for global, not-for-profit and family owned businesses. he is skilled in developing strategic roadmaps, facilitating operation diagnostics, and supporting change management. Christian demonstrates strong leadership, communication, and interpersonal skills.

Sean Stein Smith

Sean D. Stein Smith, CPA, CFE, CGMA, CMA, DBA

Assistant Professor

Lehman College

Sean is an expert and sought-after speaker, focusing on the intersection of financial services, blockchain and cryptocurrencies. He is a regular contributor to IBM’s Blockchain Unleashed website, analyzing applications for blockchain technology on business at large, as well as being a regular expert guest on China Global TV Network discussing blockchain and related applications. Sean is a member of the Advisory Board for the Wall Street Blockchain Alliance, which coordinates with the AICPA in developing standards and reporting frameworks in this emerging area. Sean continuously works with, and consults for, the AICPA and several professional training organizations in the creation and delivery of blockchain and cryptocurrency related content. He is currently under contract to publish two books focusing on blockchain applications for financial services and other industry sectors. Sean is the host of the NJCPA TechTalk Podcast, a past leader of the NJCPA Emerging Technologies Interest Group and a member of the NJCPA Board of Trustees. He is a professor at the City University of New York - Lehman College.
