8:00 AM - Social Security: Maximizing Benefits Under the "New Rules" - Ash Ahluwalia
Learn how to protect income in retirement and maximize social security benefits. We will also review the “new rules” governing Social Security as a result of the Bi-partisan Budget Act of 2015. Over 90% of recipients get less money than they are entitled to. There are over 2,700 rules governing social security, married couples have over 567 filing options and social security agents are prohibited from offering advice. We will address strategies to minimize the taxation of Social Security benefits as well as the best way to maximize benefits for high-net worth individuals.

Learn about the complex issues involved in the care of elderly or special needs family members. Including representation of disabled individuals before government agencies; information on creating special needs trusts, Medicaid, Supplemental Security Income (SSI) and guardianship; advocating for children’s rights to public benefits in schools; and long-term care planning, among other related issues.

Ash is the head of Social Security planning at OneTeam Financial. With nearly thirty years of experience, he is one of the nation’s foremost experts on Social Security and oversees the development of Social Security claiming strategies to maximize retirement income benefits. Ash is the former president and founder of National Social Security Partners, LLC (NSSP). He has two certifications in Social Security planning: National Social Security AdvisorSM and Certified in Social Security Claiming Strategies (CSSCS). Ash was recognized with the “National Social Security Advisor of the Year” award in 2016 from the National Social Security Association. He obtained his Chartered Accounting degree (a Canadian CPA.) and Certified Financial PlannerTM designation. He then went on to obtain an MBA from Wharton Business School. Ash has been published in numerous newspapers and magazines.

Jason Marx is a partner at Connell Foley, LLP in Roseland, NJ. He brings experience, compassion and a considerable knowledge of tax law to his work in estates, elder law and special needs planning. He primarily advises clients who face the challenge of caring for elderly or special needs family members, taking a holistic approach that addresses all aspects of the legal, financial and care issues involved in these complex and deeply sensitive matters. This includes representing disabled individuals before government agencies; advising on creating special needs trusts, Medicaid, Supplemental Security Income (SSI) and guardianship; advocating for children’s rights to public benefits in schools; and long-term care planning, among other related issues.

Jason is also involved in all aspects of estate planning, from creating wills and trusts to estate administration, probate and trust litigation. He listens closely to his clients to understand their goals and family dynamics and develops a strategy that protects their wealth when it is passed on to future generations. Jason is adept at tax and business planning for individuals, corporations, partnerships and limited liability companies, as well as business succession planning. He also counsels on establishing foundations, obtaining tax-exempt status and helping clients effectively manage these and other charitable entities.

In addition to helping clients plan for the future, Jason represents fiduciaries and beneficiaries in connection with the administration of estates and trusts. He works with tax authorities at both the state and federal level in connection with the auditing of tax returns, both for individuals filing personal income tax and gift tax returns and for estates filing estate tax returns.

Jason earned his B.S. from Boston University School of Management, his J.D. from Seton Hall University and an LL.M. in Taxation from NYU School of Law.
